Menurut wikipedia:

The term “rank” was created and defined by JEDEC, the memory industry standards group. On a DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 memory module, each rank has a 64 bit wide data bus (72 bit wide on DIMMs that support ECC). The number of physical DRAMs depends on their individual widths. For example, a rank of x8 (8 bit wide) DRAMs would consist of eight physical chips (nine if ECC is supported), but a rank of x4 (4 bit wide) DRAMs would consist of 16 physical chips (18 if ECC is supported). Multiple ranks can coexist on a single DIMM, and modern DIMMs can consist of one rank (single rank), two ranks (dual rank), four ranks (quad rank), or eight ranks (octal rank).

Menurut yang saya ketahui (correct me if i wrong) :

Rank adalah satu set chips memory (DRAM). Setiap "rank" mempunyai lebar data sebesar 64bit (Non ECC). Jumlah chips DRAM yang terdapat pada setiap memory tergantung dari lebar data masing-masing chips. Misalnya sebuah chips DRAM yang terpasang pada sebuah memory lebar datanya adalah 8bit, maka jumlah keseluruhan chips DRAM yang terpasang pada memory tersebut adalah 64bit : 8 bit = 8 chips. Dengan demikian apabila sebuah chips DRAM hanya mempunyai lebar 4bit maka jumlah keseluruhan chips DRAM pada memory tersebuta akan berjumlah 64bit : 4bit = 16 chips.

Yang harus diketahui juga adalah bahwa letak chips DRAM tersebut bisa hanya terpasang pada salah satu sisi (single sided) dari kepingan memory atau bisa juga terpasang pada kedua sisi memory (double sided).

Contohnya bisa dilihat pada gambar memory dibawah :

Memory tersebut mempunyai kode lengkap : MTA4ATF51264AZ-2G3B1 4GB 1Rx16 PC4-2400
Dari kode tersebut yang sekarang perlu diperhatikan adalah kode 1R x 16 yang mempunyai arti memori tersebut adalah "single rank" dan setiap chips DRAM mempunyai lebar data 16bit sehingga pada gambar terlihat ada 4 chips DRAM pada salah satu sisinya saja (single side module).
